The Tired Travelers

Well, my husband was trying to put up sheetrock to finish the basement, tripping over boxes we've never unpacked since we moved here and we are maybe moving again, who knows kind of thing, but we are trying to get the house on the market. Anyway, I made a spur of the moment decision to pack up the boxes and take them to Clarinda to store until we decide what on earth we are doing (stay tuned). In the meantime, I stopped in Des Moines on the way home at the Brass Armadillo antique mall, where I shop all the time. I am sure I now have my photo up in the break room as the wicked witch of antiques. It all started when I wanted to look in a locked case, just a bunch of wood stuff and the clerk would not open it until I told her exactly what I wanted to look at, as though my reaching in to pick up a wood bread board would cause the antique mall to collapse. She was snippy to me, I was snippy to her, then when I go check out there is a $100 plate that I never asked for on my bill! I will admit that despite hearing my mother's voice saying, "Elaine Lea, don't you dare..." I was not very pleasant, but honestly... Much more pleasant experiences in Valley Junction, Elinor's Woodinware is the most wonderful store and the owner just could not be nicer, then Shirlee at the Depot is also so nice and always has tons of bargains. Oh, and gas is 40 cents a gallon cheaper in Atlantic than in Iowa City--how????

  1. I have run across my share of snippy sales people in my day..... Why do these people have jobs where they must interact with others, if they are so miserable doing so??? I just don't get it.....

And I am also snippy back if that is the attitude they give me. No time for that! I'd shop at the other stores where there are nicer people, and let the antique mall know about their rude employee!!

I agree, gas prices are crazy... and the price difference between gas stations is puzzling....

In spite of everything, have a good day!! Penny

  2. Hey! You gals think you got it bad over there cos gas is 40c dearer in Iowa City? Try paying what we pay, which is roughly...$11.50 a gallon!! It's just going up and up and up...
And as for snippy sales bitches...I ask them if they got a refund. When they ask where from, I curtly reply 'Charm School' and walk off! It works every time...I think you could call that Touché!
Now then, Elaine Lea...get on and ruin some more Priceless Antiques!
Oh, only 8 more days to go!!
    Chat soon,
    Love Karen xx

    1. Karen, I know how to reply, what a miracle! How on earth do you go anywhere with gas at that ridiculous price? I know we have more miles to cover here, but honestly! Package will be on the way in the morning....

  3. Hi Elaine, I have been thinking about writing you a letter... using the antique method of pen, paper, and post office. I am wondering where you may be moving and think I should offer up lovely central Indiana. We are involved in a short sale just a block off the village and it has 9.6 acres of lovely woods. The short sale process is lengthy - we put our bid in at the beginning of Feb. The house needs works but it has lovely bones dating back to 1890. If I can't get you to move here, you must at least come to visit. Anne

    1. Doubling my notes, I left a note on your blog, as my email addresses are lost in outerspace after the untimely death of my old computer. Please give me a note at j.schlichtmann@mchsi.com or even a phone call! Elaine
